1. 如果两个动词语义相同且都可以表达被动含义,那么两个词的用法可以互换。此时,根据习惯,常用“-ing”形式而不用“-ed”形式。试比较:
The door was broken into by a group of thugs last night. Yesterday morning an attempt was made on my life (= an attempt to kill me was begun).
2. 当两个动的字面意义相同时,通常采用“-ing”形式来表示正在进行或者持续的动作;用“-ed”形式则往往暗示完成或结束的动作。
I saw him helping an old woman across the road just now. He is known as one who loves helping others. 她昨天帮助了十个学生通过这个考试。 那个学生被帮助(做完形填空) 老师帮助了那些需要帮助的学生。
3. 有些动词不能用来修饰动词。因此没有“动词+ed/ing”的形式。例如,不能说*help asking, *give wondering, *send studying。
